General Camp Information
Getting to the Institute
The Kansas Journalism Institute takes place at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. When you arrive on campus, go to Oliver Hall. Registration will take place in the Oliver Hall lobby from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 23.
We strongly discourage students from driving to the institute. However, if you must drive yourself you may park in the lot behind the residence hall. Parking does not ticket residential lots during the summer. Be sure not to park in a red faculty/staff space. You will be required to turn in your keys to the KJI dorm director at registration for insurance purposes. Keys will be returned at checkout. Any student in or on a moving vehicle during the Institute will be sent home.
Dorm life at the Insitute
Students will be staying in Oliver Hall during the week of the Kansas Journalism Institute.
Each floor of Oliver Hall is served by a set of elevators.
We will make every attempt to accommodate roommate requests. Under no circumstances will students be allowed to change rooms unless approved by the KJI dorm director.
Your room is furnished with bunk beds, a large closet and a dresser. Please do not rearrange the furniture. Rooms are checked prior to arrival. Any damage during the week of KJI will be assessed to you.
Oliver Hall has 24-hour security in the main lobby; all exterior doors are locked 24/7. Students must use their access card to access the building using the card swipe system. In addition, we have one full-time adult residence hall director who works only with KJI students and staff. For every 15 KJI students, there will be assigned one counselor. Most of our counselors are KU journalism majors who are capable of helping students with their class assignments.
You will be issued a room key, a meal card and an access card. Lost keys that result in a lock change will cost $50. There is no fee to replace meal cards or access cards. Lost cards should be reported to the KJI dorm director for a suitable replacement. Remember to turn in your key at check out Thursday morning following the closing assembly. All KJI students need to vacate Oliver Hall by 11 a.m. or an additional day’s room charge will be assessed. Check out for all residents will take place on the individual floors of Oliver Hall.
Meal service will be provided for KJI students. Students will be eating breakfast and dinner at the Oliver Hall Dining Center. Breakfast will run from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m.; dinner from 5:30 to 7 p.m. For lunch students will get cards good at either The Underground at Wescoe Hall or at The Market in the Kansas Union.
The University of Kansas is considered a safe campus. However, we encourage students to keep their rooms locked when unattended. Since we do require night classes, we ask students to walk to and from the dorm in groups. No student should leave classroom buildings alone to walk back to the dormitory. If necessary, a counselor in Oliver Hall may be contacted.
What to Bring
Clothing
Casual clothing that would be appropriate for school is appropriate at camp. Use your best judgement; T-shirts are OK, tube tops are not. Shorts are allowed in the classrooms. Students may want to bring a sweater or light jacket because the classrooms can be quite cool. Bare feet will not be allowed in classrooms or the dining hall.
Shoes
The University of Kansas is located on Mount Oread. It gets its name from the hills that comprise the campus. Don’t make the mistake of letting your impressions of Kansas be dictated by the Wizard of Oz; not all of Kansas is flat. A good pair of walking shoes is essential.
Bedding
Although Kansas summer nights are typically hot and humid, you may wish to bring a blanket if you get chilly sleeping in air conditioning. You will also need to bring with you a pillow, pillowcase, sheets and towels. The residence hall will provide no linens.
Toiletries
The dorms are not a hotel. Soap is provided in the restrooms, but be sure to bring all other essentails with you. If you discover that you have forgotten something important, please let the KJI dorm director or a counselor know.
